Carl Sandburg Middle School

Our school is named after one of the best known poets in American literature, Carl Sandburg. Born in 1878, he grew up in a vigorous America, fought his way from obscurity to international fame in the best tradition of our country. He was at various times a soldier, dishwasher, harvest hand, and newspaper writer. Mr. Sandburg is perhaps best known as widely for his biography and his poetry, having written the famous Abraham Lincoln, The Prairie Years, and The War Years.

Thirty-four colleges and universities, both here and abroad, have bestowed honorary degrees on Mr. Sandburg. In 1952, the American Academy of Arts and Letters awarded their Gold Medal for History and Biography to Mr. Sandburg. Our school is one of the many schools now bearing his name.

The entire nation mourned the death of Carl Sandburg on July 22, 1967. Tribute was paid throughout the country as well as abroad. This famous American who progressed from obscurity to fame is a good example for our students to emulate.
